peak oil

Since World War II the middle class have invested much of their newfound wealth in suburbia. It has promised a sense of space, affordability, family life and upward mobility. As the population of suburban sprawl has exploded in the past 50 years, so too has the suburban way of life become embedded in the middle class consciousness. Suburbia, and all it promises, has become the middle class Dream.

But as we enter the 21st century, serious questions are beginning to emerge about the sustainability of this way of life. With brutal honesty and a touch of irony, The End of Suburbia explores the middle class Way of Life and its prospects as the planet approaches a critical era,
as global demand for fossil fuels begins to outstrip supply. World Oil Peak and the inevitable decline of fossil fuels are upon us now, some scientists and policy makers argue in this documentary.

The consequences of inaction in the face of this global crisis are enormous. What does Oil Peak mean for the Western World? As energy prices skyrocket in the coming years, how will the populations of suburbia react to the collapse of their dream? Are today's suburbs destined to become the slums of tomorrow? And what can be done NOW, individually and collectively, to avoid The End of Suburbia ?

If you are new to this issue, goooogle Peak Oil and be prepared to be shocked

The dogs of war

Dogs of war and men of hate
with no cause, we don't discriminate
discovery is to be disowned
our currency is flesh and bone
hell opened up and put on sale
gather round and haggle
for hard cash, we will lie and deceive
even our masters don't know the webs we heave

one world, it's a battleground

The post war dream

Grumpy Old Men

Grumpy Old Men is a conversational-style television programme on BBC2 which debuted in 2003. The first run of four programmes was repeated several times before a second series, also of four episodes, was shown in 2004. There were also 2003 & 2004 Christmas specials.

The format shows a number of well-known middle-aged men talk about any issues of modern life which irritate them, from the proliferation of excessive road signs to uneccessary and overly-loud mobile phone conversations. The appeal of the show stems largely from the fact that the indignant rants shown are directed against things that many people neither grumpy nor old find absurd or infuriating themselves.

Cool! don't consider myself old (1947) or really grumpy but do find somethings about modern life infuriating, love computers and find them the best thing since sliced bread, mobile phones another story. Intrusive, annoying, disruptive and a pain in the ass to use at times. Pet gripe!! people on publice transport uneccessary and overly-loud mobile phone conversations ( what is it with mobile phone users, this need to shout, the person you are calling is on the phone not across the room) discussing last nights endevours, misdeeds and other boring information about their humdrum existence. Too much information!

I'm Becoming a Grumpy Old Man

I find myself griping about subject's I've always associated with the complaints of older people. I find myself being less tolerant of things that I used to be tolerant of. Then maybe it's because we now have the power of the blog to give voice to what peeves us. No more letters to the editor, suddenly we have our own soapbox a forum for all to see and read our rantings.
